The Pandemics Effect On Australian Migration Coronavirus

The pandemics effect on Australian Migration – Coronavirus

Australia’s response to the Covid-19 Pandemic has been sweeping and largely successful.

Australia is now one of the safest places in the world to live in.

Part of this was due to the Government’s early action in closing the borders to non-citizens and permanent residents and instructing all people to undertake a mandatory 14-day quarantine upon arrival.

Copson Migration Partners fully supports this border closure to continue to keep the Australian Community Safe.

But how will this huge fall in net immigration affect Australian society and the economy moving forward?

Net immigration is set to fall by an enormous 85 per cent in the financial year until June 2021.

This will hit not only the 37-billion-dollar education sector but demand for everything from housing, food, and entertainment to cars. In short, this huge gap in arrivals will affect all Australian businesses.

It does, however, offer a unique opportunity to visa holders still within Australia.

The huge drop in numbers of applicants may see visas with traditionally long wait times like partner visas being processed sooner.

Last year there were 40,000 partner visas processed leaving a further 90,000 in the queue. Could this year see this huge backlog addressed?

Visa holders here may also find employers unable to source skilled labour from overseas willing to sponsor them with large skill shortages created by the lack of incoming migrant labour.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison stated Australia needs 160,000 to 210,000 arrivals to sustain GDP per capita growth. So, one thing is for sure this pause on migration is temporary. Australia needs Migrant labour.

“But at some stage in the future, we will reopen our borders, because we’re a country built on migration and we’ll continue to be a country built on migration.” The Hon. Alan Tudge Acting Immigration Minister.
